This is course # 2001 in IHSS Career Pathways and CalGrows. It is part of the Cognitive Impairments and Behavioral Health Pathway, which is a specialized pathway.

Working with someone with someone with dementia and/or Alzheimer’s disease can present unique challenges. This course will help you to better understand signs and symptoms of memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning, and provide strategies to better support consumers navigating these challenges.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define “dementia” and describe how it may affect a consumer’s learning and memory, thinking, language, judgment, and/or behavior ​
  • Understand several types of dementia, their causes, and differences between them
  • Describe ways in which dementia can impact a consumer’s loved ones, and how to navigate those challenges
  • List strategies for supporting consumers with dementia (including focusing on the process vs the outcome, supporting with reality orientation, validating a consumer, and redirecting)
  • Describe several strategies for improved communications with someone with dementia
